Dieng Temple

Hey hey guys.. How are you doing??? Cool? I hope soo.. Well today i want to share about Dieng Temple or we called it Candi Dieng :) Are you curious???? Check it out!!!!



Dieng temple is a collection of temples located in the foothills of the Dieng , Wonosobo , Central Java . The temple occupies an area of Dieng plateau at an altitude of 2000 m above sea level , extends north-south direction with a width of about 1900 m along the 800 m .
Wing Hindu Shiva temples were probably built between the late 8th century to the early 9th century is believed to be the oldest temple in Java . So far have not found the information written on the history of Dieng Temple , but experts estimate that these temples were built by the kings of the Sanjaya dynasty . In this Dieng found an inscription dated 808 AD , which is the oldest inscription written in ancient Javanese , which are still extant today . A statue of Shiva were found in the area is now kept in the National Museum in Jakarta . Dieng Temple was probably built in two phases . The first stage took place between the late 7th century until the first quarter of the 8th century , includes the construction of Arjuna temple , temple Semar , Heroine Temple and Temple Gatutkatja . The second stage is a continuation of the first phase , which lasted till about the year 780 AD

Dieng temple was first discovered back in 1814 . When it was a British soldier who was traveled to the area saw a bunch Dieng temple is submerged in a puddle lake . In 1956 , Van Kinsbergen led efforts drying lake where the temples were located. Cleanup efforts continued by the Dutch government in 1864 , followed by recording and taking pictures by Van Kinsbergen .

Dieng temple complex overall width approximately 1.8 x 0.8 km2 . The temples in the Dieng temple is divided into 3 groups and 1 individual temple are named after characters in the puppet story from the Mahabharata . The third group is the group Arjuna temple , Gatutkatja Group , Dwarawati group and one individual temple is Candi Bima .

a. Arjuna group

Arjuna group is located in a central area of ​​Dieng Temple , consisting of four temples that lined elongated north-south direction . Arjuna temple is located at the south end , then successively to the north are the Temple Heroine , Temple and Temple Puntadewa Sembadra . Right in front of the temple Arjuna , Semar temple there . The fourth temple complexes, facing west , except Semar temple overlooking the temple Arjuna . This compound can be said to be the most intact group compared to the other temples in the Dieng area .




Arjuna temple . This temple is similar to temples in Gedong Songo complexes . Is laid square with an area approximately the size of about 4 m2 . The temple stands on a high base 1 m . On the west side there are stairs leading to the entrance to the small room in the temple . The door has a sort of cubicle viewer that juts out about 1 m from the body temple . Above the doorway is decorated with sculptures Kalamakara .

Cube -shaped roof of the temple compound , the upward decreasing . The top and the top of the roof was destroyed . On each side of each cube are niches and in every corner there is a round ornament shaped like a pointy crown . Most of the ornaments are damaged .

Semar temple . The temple is located opposite to the temple Arjuna . Plan basically rectangular longitudinal north-south direction . Batur temple is about 50 cm tall , plain unadorned . The stairs leading to the entrance to the temple's hall located on the east side . The entrance is not equipped booths viewer . Doorway framed with a decorative pattern and paste paper dragon head at the base . Above the threshold there is Kalamakara without a lower jaw .




On the wall in the left and right of the door there is a small window hole . Heroine temple . The temple is located in the northern temple Arjuna . Batur temple is about 50 cm tall with a square plan . On the east side there are stairs to the booth viewer .


On the north wall there is a carving depicting Vishnu , on the east wall depicting Shiva and Brahma on the south wall depicts . Most of the sculpture was damaged . The roof has crumbled, the original form .

Puntadewa temple . Like the other temples , temple Puntadewa size is not too big, but this temple seem higher . The temple sits on top of a double decker shelf at about 2.5 m . The roof of the temple is similar to Sembadra temple roof , which is a big cube . The peak of the roof has also been destroyed , so there is the original form . b . group Gatutkatja

c . group Dwarawati

d . Candi Bima



Bima temple situated on a hill alone . This temple is the largest building in the Dieng temple collection . The shape is different from temples in Central Java in general . The viewer on the front protrudes about 1.5 m , serves as a chamber viewer toward the temple's main hall . Viewer on the other three sides to form niches where statues lay . Currently all empty . None of the remaining statues .


Shape of the roof of the temple consists of 5 levels , each level follows the curves of her figure , the upward decreasing . Each level is decorated with double lotus seam and niches kudu .
